From Yurt to Dream Home: A Tale of Shipping Containers and Tenacity

Well, butter my biscuits and call me a gardener, I’ve just watched a video that’s got me all aflutter. It’s about a family who’ve taken the phrase “thinking outside the box” and turned it into “living inside the box” – quite literally.

Now, I’ve seen my fair share of unique homes in my time. I once visited a friend who lived in a converted school bus, and I thought that was the bee’s knees. But this family, they’ve taken it to a whole new level. They’ve built a home out of shipping containers. Yes, you heard me right, those big metal boxes you see on cargo ships.

This family, bless their hearts, started their journey living in a yurt. Now, I’ve always admired yurts. They remind me of those big, round zucchini I grow in my garden every summer. But as charming as they are, they’re not exactly the epitome of modern living. This family soon realized that, especially when their little one came along.

So, they decided to build a more permanent home using shipping containers. It’s like deciding to upgrade from a garden shed to a greenhouse, but on a much grander scale. They worked with a company called Victoria Shipping Containers. Now, I’ve dealt with some tough cucumbers in my time, but these folks were as sturdy as my prize-winning pumpkins. They cut windows, removed walls, and even welded in temporary support beams.

The delivery of the containers was a sight to behold. It was like watching a carefully choreographed dance, each container lifted and placed with precision. It reminded me of the time I tried to maneuver a wheelbarrow full of compost through my rose garden. Let’s just say, it didn’t end well for the roses.

Their design includes six containers, four on the bottom and two on top. It’s like a layer cake, but instead of frosting and sprinkles, it’s steel and rivets. The bottom floor will house the kitchen, living room, bathroom, and food storage area. The top floor will have bedrooms. They even plan to have a mudroom, which I think is a splendid idea. After all, every gardener knows the importance of a good mudroom.

Watching their journey from yurt to shipping container home has been as exciting as watching my sunflowers bloom. It’s a testament to their tenacity and creativity. It’s got me thinking about my own little garden shed. Maybe it’s time for an upgrade. A greenhouse made from shipping containers, perhaps? Now, wouldn’t that be something!
