4 Expensive Mistakes to AVOID When Buying Land for Off Grid Living

We came across this great video from Sara and Ryan from One Foot Off the Grid and had to share it with you. 8 years ago this couple bought a raw piece of land in the Hood Canal in Washington. They’ve been developing the property slowly and have had their fair share of experience with off grid living.

In the video you’ll find out 4 Mistakes to Avoid, including one that cost them $8,000.

The idea here is to save you some money, along with time from making these mistakes yourself when you buy land for off grid living.

Mistake #1 – Being too eager/impatient.

It is HARD to not just go for it when you feel like you have found your dream piece of land, but we wish we would have slowed down a little bit to really think some things through before finalizing the purchase of our land.

Mistake #2 – Understanding the details of your contract.

When you purchase your land there may be a contract that includes road maintenance fees, access to various areas around/near your land, rules on how many structures can go on your land, if you can raise livestock on your land, etc. Be sure you know those details before you purchase.

Mistake #3 – Get a Survey.

This is one that could have SAVED us some major money that we are going to have to spend now. When you purchase your land, be sure to check when the most recent survey was last done. If it was done over 10 years ago and/or is no longer clearly marked, it will be worth the effort to have a survey done before you purchase.

Mistake #4 – Find the RIGHT Real Estate Agent.

If you are working with a real estate agent in your search for land be sure that your agent is familiar in helping people purchase land. If you don’t you may spend WAY TOO much money on your land like we did. Those are our 4 mistakes. We hope this video was helpful to you and has helped you feel more confident in purchasing your own land to build your off grid dream!!
