Winter Backpacking Tips from Dixie
As the colder months approach, many of us start to think twice about hitting the trails for a backpacking trip. The thought of spending the night in freezing temperatures and braving the elements can be intimidating, especially for those of us who aren’t used to it.
But for those of you who are eager to brave the cold and enjoy the beauty of the outdoors during the winter months, I’ve compiled some tips and tricks to help you stay warm on your next backpacking trip.
First, when you’re hiking and you stop to take a break, make sure to put on an extra layer immediately. Your body temperature will start to cool down as soon as you stop moving, so it’s important to try to prevent yourself from getting chilled in the first place.
Once you reach your campsite for the day, it’s best to set up your tent and other gear before taking a break. This will allow you to change into dry, warm clothes before you start to get cold. And when it comes to choosing a campsite, try to find a spot that’s high enough to avoid cold air settling in, but not so high that you’re exposed to the wind.
Layering is also key when it comes to staying warm in the cold. Instead of wearing one bulky jacket, it’s best to work in layers with a base layer, mid layer, and outer layer. This will trap heat next to your body and help to keep you warm.
These are just a few tips to help you stay warm on your next winter backpacking trip. With a little preparation and the right gear, you can enjoy the beauty of the outdoors even in the coldest months.
