5 “Crazy Simple” Tips to Build Your Emergency Food Supply

Your emergency food supply is probably the most important part of prepping for a SHTF scenario. What many people do not understand is that even when you shop on an extremely bare-minimum budget, you can still manage to buy reserves to put into your supply. In order to better help our readers, we have put together a list of five “crazy simple” ways to efficiently boost your food supply.

5) Buy Something Extra Every Trip

We know that many of you actually live on a really tight budget especially with the economy that we live in. We know that you may think that it is difficult to even spare a few extra bucks for food storage, but it does not have to be so.

Canned vegetables and macaroni and cheese are typically very cheap, so buying even one or two of these can boost your supply.

If you go to the grocery store on a daily basis, buy a canned good to put in storage. If you go shopping once a week, designate only a few dollars to donate to your supply.

It does not seem like much, but in a month’s time, you can certainly see what good it does.

You should remember to try to get a variety of things, but always keep it in your budget.

4) Coupon Coupon Coupon

This may seem excessive, but the truth is that you can get many non-perishable items for less than you would pay for one item at full price.

You do not have to be an extreme couponer, but you should always keep an eye out for deals that are better than usual.

By doing this, you will be stocking up on your food supply, learn to purchase food at lower rates and even possibly cut back on your food costs so you can start getting more ammo and medical items.

3) Order Cases of Dehydrated Food

dehydrated food

When you get your yearly holiday bonus, a little bit of overtime or have a couple hundred dollars saved, you can always order a barrel or case of dehydrated food.

Some barrels could last a family of four for months at a time.

This is a cheap and useful alternative to basic foods that are typically bought from shopping centers.

The barrels and crates also take up way less space than tons of food stocked throughout your house.

2) Buy MREs

If you do not know what an MRE is, we will explain it.

An MRE is a government food package that has a full balanced meal inside.

The package also contains things like toilet paper, so that the person eating it is somewhat accommodated in other ways as well.

While some survivalists say that you should not keep these, they are a good alternative to having no food stored, they each have 1,200 calories and they provide a full balanced meal.

If you are uncomfortable with purchasing actual MREs, you can always try one of the many alternatives that have been surfacing over the years.

1) Save your Supply

When times get tough, finances get cut and cupboards get bare, do not eat your food supply.

In order to keep stocked up, you should learn to tough it out until you are certain that there is no other option than dipping into your supply.

By learning how to shop smart, stock and store and balance your money, you will be ensuring that your supply is only going to be used when it is absolutely necessary.

There are some situations that arise where one would be tempted to dip into the mass quantity of food that is stored, but it should not be done unless there is no other choice.

Keep in mind that we know that it is easier for some than it is for others to stock up on food items.

We also know that sometimes things like job loss, cut hours and other major disasters occur, but it should be known that while stocking up on your SHTF supply, you should also try to stock up your cupboards at home.

Buy plenty of non-perishables that can last you through the temporary emergencies so that you are able to keep your supply well-stocked and overflowing.

27 Ways To Use Baking Soda When SHTF

baking soda

Baking soda, in all of its wonderful glory, is an absolute “must have” in every SHTF BOB, BOV or bug-out anything. From insect bites to hygienic uses, baking soda is like a cure all for whatever could be ailing you. I have compiled a list of 27 ways that baking soda can be used in a SHTF situation.

1. Insect Bites

baking soda paste

Typical insect bites are not exactly dangerous or life-threatening, but after continuous scratching they can become worrisome and irritating. By applying a simple water and baking soda paste, you will find soothing relief from the itch that mosquitos and other bugs give you.

2. Freshen Mouth

Let’s be honest. Not everyone will remember to pack plenty of toothbrushes and toothpaste, so baking soda is a great alternative. Even using your damp finger to scrub baking soda around your mouth will kill germs and bacteria, and it will help keep your teeth white. This may sound trivial, but suffering from an abscess tooth while fighting off a herd of zombies does not sound like a good idea to me!

3. Soothes Feet

You will be on your feet more than you are used to. Whether you are walking, running, hunting or scouting, you will likely have some very sore feet. Soaking your feet in warm water with about ¼ cup of baking soda will actually soothe your feet and help heal those blisters that have started forming.

4. Clean Batteries

Okay, this one is common sense, but it still needs to be included. A baking soda scrub will neutralize the battery acid corrosion. The important thing to remember is to disconnect the battery from all terminals before applying the paste, and always use a cloth (or like item) to scrub the acid away.

5. Extinguish Fires

Much like sand, when you throw baking soda over the fire it will put the fire out. This will come in handy when you are trying to quickly put out a fire and get out of dodge when there is a threat nearby.

6. Relief for Sunburns

This method will not keep your skin from blistering, but by applying a paste of water and baking soda to the sore areas, the mixture will soothe your pain. It is recommended that you only use your precious baking soda on severe sunburns because you do not want to use it all up on something so minor.

7. Check Soil Acidity for your Vegetable Garden

soil check

In all honesty, you should have some way to start growing your own food (if you have not started already), and baking soda can be a great help for your garden. If you mix ¼ cup baking soda with two cups of water and add one cup of soil, you will see the water bubble if the soil is acidic enough for a garden.

8. Poison Ivy Relief

baking soda paste on poison ivy

Okay, so poison ivy is mostly just an inconvenience. While this is true, there are some people who are highly allergic to it, and others who will have to care for infants, so having poison ivy relief can be extremely convenient. The soda helps to dry out the poisonous oils when a soda paste is applied to affected areas of the skin.

9. Melt Ice

If you live and plan to stay in the south, this might not mean much to you, but the northern hemisphere tends to get plenty of freezes in the winter months. The scavenging for food, you might have to run up and down stairs. You can spread baking soda over an icy surface to quickly melt the ice for easier and safer transport of goods.

10. Keep Animals out of your Garden

If you sprinkle a thick circle of baking soda around your garden, you will be able to keep rodents, deer and other animals away from your much needed food source.

11. Jelly Fish Stings

If you are caught in or around the ocean, you may end up getting stung by jelly fish. While urine is a great way to soothe jelly fish stings, you may be more inclined to put a baking soda paste on the affected area than you are to having your child or spouse spray you down.

12. Diaper Rash Relief

Not everyone has children, I get it… BUT for someone who does, this is something to keep in mind. Mixing a thick baking soda paste and applying it to a diaper rash can soothe almost any diaper rash.

13. Relieve Heartburn

Simply mix a tablespoon (approximate measures are fine) of baking soda with a glass of water, drink it down and you have given yourself the equal to a tablet of other fizzy heartburn relief medications.

14. Repels Household Bugs

Not everyone can live comfortably with cockroaches and ants, so this is something that you should keep in mind. If you sprinkle a thick layer of baking soda around a room, these bothersome bugs should keep away.

15. Removes Sweat Stains

sweat stains

Okay, so you don’t have a washing machine, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t try to keep clean. If you scrub the soiled area with baking soda, you will notice that the stain has either reduced or gone completely away.

16. Removes Oil and Grease Stains

Again, this is trivial in a SHTF scenario, but it is something to keep in mind if you happen to meet your dream guy or gal and plan a scavenging date. Keeping clean is actually more important that most people would like to believe.

17. Exfoliates Skin

You can use a baking soda paste to remove dry skin. Some people suffer from eczema or psoriasis, and this could really come in useful for them.

18. Removes Insecticides

If there was not a nuclear war, you will likely be safe to eat fresh fruits and vegetables. If this is the case, rinsing them with water and baking soda will rid them of the insecticides and other poisons that could be harmful.

19. Brush Pet Teeth

Just like humans, pet teeth are important to keep healthy. If it is your dog, he may be helping you hunt. With bad teeth, your hunting pal could become an unwanted burden rather than a tool for survival.

20. Relieve Body Odor

In the off-chance that you do find some running water and do not have soap, you can use baking soda as a body wash. If you have it handy, use it! Just because society has crumbled does not mean that you can throw away all forms of hygiene.

21. Cleans and Protects Hair

Again, hygiene is still kind of important. If you use baking soda as a shampoo, you will reduce grime and build-up while protecting your hair from unnecessary breakage.

22. Sweeten Tomatoes

When growing your vegetable garden, you can sprinkle baking soda on the top soil every few days. If you do this, your tomatoes will be sweeter and juicier.

23. Stuffy Noses

A stuffy nose can actually lead to some very hard times. Baking soda can be used to help relieve stuffy noses in the off-chance that you find or have a battery-operated vaporizer handy.

24. Remove Gassy Substances from Beans

Gas cramps suck! That’s all that can be said about that. If you are caught in a shoot-out, running from a threat or worse you do not want to be doubled over with stomach pains. Sprinkle some baking soda in that bean mixture, and you should be good to go.

25. Deodorize Pet Hair

You will likely be sleeping and eating with your pets. If you do not want that un-Godly pet smell, you can sprinkle some baking soda on their fur to rid it of odor.

26. No Weeds

When you finally settle into a new place, you will probably want to keep the weeds away for your much needed garden. Sprinkling baking soda on the area can help keep them from growing.

27. Repel Rain on your Windshield

If your wipers are bad and you have fuel in your care, you can sprinkle baking soda on your windshield to help keep the raindrops from forming and distorting your view.

As you can see, there are many uses for baking soda. If you are in a SHTF situation, you will want to conserve your supply, but that does not mean that you completely ignore cleanliness and hygiene. In this situation, doctors will be few and far between, so you will have to keep yourself healthy. Being dirty and unkempt can hinder your efforts.

10 Ways to Protect Your Family from Ebola

Due to recent events, many people are wondering how to efficiently protect themselves and family members from the Ebola virus. We have compiled a list of safe ways to protect yourself from the virus because we care about our readers. It is, however, up to you to use this list to its fullest in order to be completely protected from the virus.

Avoid Africa

We all know that Africa has an Ebola epidemic. If you are planning a safari, a mission or any other trip, you will want to postpone it indefinitely. If you arrive on the continent, you are at a much higher risk of acquiring the virus than if you avoid it at all costs.

Use a Microscope

ebola strain

Either own or have use of a really expensive microscope. Once you do this, you will need to continuously check your blood for any proof that the Ebola strain has not connected to you in any way.

Go to Med School

In order to be able to properly distinguish the Ebola strain in your blood, you will need to be taught how. Med school is the key to this knowledge. You will want to focus particularly on viruses, bacteria and fungi so that you can properly distinguish the strain from all else.

Body Condom

During sexual intercourse, you will want to make sure that both parties are wearing full body condoms. This will ensure that no sweat, saliva or other bodily fluids are transferred. Even if you are married, this is necessary due to outside exposure to the virus.

Ensure that those Exposed use Proper Hygiene and Precautions

If you see someone sneezing or coughing, ensure that he covers his mouth. Due to the fact that you do not know if he has been exposed, you will want to ensure that he uses proper hygiene and care so that you do not contract the virus from him.

Watch for Symptoms

ebola symptoms

Symptoms for Ebola include fever, chills and other symptoms that can be found in the common cold, influenza and many other viruses. The important thing to remember is that once you start showing symptoms, you are extremely contagious and you will need to stay where you are, call 9-1-1 and tell the dispatcher that you believe that you have Ebola. By telling the dispatcher this, you will ensure that the people who come to get you are properly suited and informed of the dangers of the situation.

Avoid Areas Frequented by Travellers and Tourists

People who have been on long trips tend to need things like toiletries and food. In order to avoid contact with people who may have been exposed, you will need to avoid mass retailers, fast food chains and even most ATMs and banks. This precaution is essential because if someone exposed sneezes on an employee or machine that you will be using, you are at a much higher risk than ever before.

Stay Up-to-date on all Ebola Developments

Watch the news, read the newspaper, research online and check with the CDC website as much as possible. While many times, the news only covers things that are fresh and new, you may be able to catch something that shows importance to helping and containing this virus so that it does not become a world epidemic.

Analyze Information and Report it

If you believe that you know something that the government and doctors do not know, you should report it to your elected official. While many people believe that shutting down travel to and from known affected countries would keep the virus from spreading further, it does not appear that anyone has informed officials of this discovery because they have not done so, yet.

Lock Up Tight

Being that you are prepared financially and have plenty of resources on hand, you should be able to lock you and your family in your home for months without having to leave for food, water, toiletries, etc. If you can lock your family up until the epidemic has ended, you are guaranteeing your safety and survival, but you must not let anyone in or out of your home for this to work.

The truth is that there is not much that the average person can do to stay completely clear of the virus. If you wash your hands with soap on a regular basis, you are lessening your chances of contracting the virus. If you do not have the resources handy to do any or all of the above, your best option is to use the basic hygiene instructions that you have been given since kindergarten.

Health worker 2nd in US to test positive for Ebola

DALLAS (AP) — A Texas health care worker has tested positive for Ebola even though she wore full protective gear while caring for a hospitalized patient who later died from the virus, health officials said Sunday. If the preliminary diagnosis is confirmed, it would be the first known case of the disease being contracted or transmitted in the U.S.

Dr. Tom Frieden, head of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said the diagnosis shows there was a clear breach of safety protocol and all those who treated Thomas Eric Duncan are now considered to be potentially exposed.

The worker wore a gown, gloves, mask and shield while she cared for Duncan during his second visit to Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital, said Dr. Daniel Varga of Texas Health Resources, which runs the hospital. Frieden said the worker has not been able to identify a specific breach of protocol that might have led to her being infected.

Duncan, who arrived in the U.S. from Liberia to visit family on Sept. 20, first sought medical care for fever and abdominal pain on Sept. 25. He told a nurse he had traveled from Africa, but he was sent home. He returned Sept. 28 and was placed in isolation because of suspected Ebola. He died Wednesday.

More than 4,000 people have died in the ongoing Ebola epidemic centered in West Africa, according to World Health Organization figures published Friday. Almost all of those deaths have been in the three worst-affected countries, Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea.

Texas health officials have been closely monitoring nearly 50 people who had or may have had close contact with Duncan in the days after he started showing symptoms.

Varga says the health care worker reported a fever Friday night as part of a self-monitoring regimen required by the CDC. He said another person is in isolation, and the hospital has stopped accepting new emergency room patients.

“We knew a second case could be a reality, and we’ve been preparing for this possibility,” said Dr. David Lakey, commissioner of the Texas Department of State Health Services. “We are broadening our team in Dallas and working with extreme diligence to prevent further spread.”

But Frieden on Sunday raised concerns about a possible breach of safety protocol and told CBS’ “Face the Nation” that among the things CDC will investigate is how the workers took off that gear, because removing it incorrectly can lead to contamination. Investigators will also look at dialysis and intubation, procedures with the potential for spreading infectious material.

Officials said they also received information that there may be a pet in the health care worker’s apartment, and they have a plan in place to care for the animal. They do not believe the pet has signs of having contracted Ebola.

Health care workers treating Ebola patients are among the most vulnerable, even if wearing protective gear. A Spanish nurse assistant recently became the first health care worker infected outside west Africa during the ongoing outbreak: she helped care for a missionary priest who was brought to a Madrid hospital. More than 370 health care workers in west Africa have fallen ill or died in west Africa since epidemic began earlier this year.

Ebola spreads through close contact with a symptomatic person’s bodily fluids, such as blood, sweat, vomit, feces, urine, saliva or semen. Those fluids must have an entry point, like a cut or scrape or someone touching the nose, mouth or eyes with contaminated hands, or being splashed. The World Health Organization says blood, feces and vomit are the most infectious fluids, while the virus is found in saliva mostly once patients are severely ill. The whole live virus has never been culled from sweat.

Duncan, the first person in the U.S. diagnosed with Ebola, came to Dallas to attend the high-school graduation of his son, who was born in a refugee camp in Ivory Coast and brought to the U.S. as a toddler when his mother successfully applied for resettlement.

The trip was the culmination of decades of effort, friends and family members said. But when Duncan arrived in Dallas, though he showed no symptoms, he had already been exposed to Ebola. His neighbors in Liberia believe Duncan become infected when he helped a pregnant neighbor who later died from it. It was unclear if he knew about her diagnosis before traveling.

10 Tips to Help You Escape a Riot

riot 10 tips

Whether you think that you need to prepare for a riot or not, you should always know a few basic ways to escape if one ensues around you. Almost every prepper or survivalist will tell you that the best way to escape a riot is to not be in a place that will obviously be susceptible to one. Unfortunately, there are some instances that cannot be helped. Just a little food for thought is that if you live in a city as opposed to suburban or country area, you are more likely to encounter riot scenarios.

1. Keep Calm!

keep calm

Riots typically occur because several people have become overly excited and angered over a common situation. When you notice that the conversation is getting too heated too quickly, you may want to calmly start looking for and moving towards an exit. If you get scared and freak out, you are likely to aggravate the crowd even more than they already are.

2. Get Indoors!

While it is important to get indoors and away from the crowd, you will want to choose wisely on where you go. If you are close to local stores or political buildings, you will likely want to steer clear of those. Being that most rioters will have their own political opinions, state and government buildings can quickly become overrun with the exact situation that you are trying to get out of. Stores will likely have looters and people who have no qualms with hurting you for what they want and think that you are trying to take. If you can get into a home, that will be your safest bet.

3. Cross Your Arms!

This may sound a little absurd, but having your arms crossed over your chest and midsection could actually save your life. Not only do you have a buffer between you and the other people, but you have something between you and your vital organs. If violence ensues and you are either stabbed or pushed into a sharp object, you would much rather it be your arms than your lungs.

4. Baby Steps will get you Out

Believe it or not, taking small steps will get you further than trying to leap and run over people. When you take baby steps, you are more likely to find sure footing. If you happen to slip and fall during a riot, you can easily be overlooked or trampled. People typically will not be paying attention to the ground in these situations.

5. Fetal Position

fetal position

If you do happen to fall down, ball up! Yes, you will get stepped on, but it may be the only thing that saves your life in the long run. Stay in the fetal position until you are positive that you can quickly regain your footing and make your way to the exit.

6. Go Up Wind

Whether the riot is government related or not, more than likely police and other government officials will be called in to handle the situation. If officials get called in, they will likely have gas to spray on the crowd. If you are traveling up-wind, you are getting yourself away from the crowd without putting yourself in direct line of the traveling gases.

7. If you can’t Beat them, Join them

I know that you don’t want anything to do with this situation. You are simply looking for a way out. If you blend in with the crowd, you are more likely to make it through the situation unharmed. By yelling the same obscenities as the rioters, they will pay you no mind as you make your way towards the closest exit. While it may be hard to cheer for something that you do not believe in or agree with, it may be what saves your life in a SHTF scenario.

8. Be Prepared

Any time that you are going somewhere with a large crowd, you will want to know where the closest exit is, multiple routes to get to it and stay as close to it as possible. topsecretplanBy keeping a shorter distance between yourself and the exit, you are less likely to be trampled than if you put yourself at center stage. You always need to remember that big crowds can bring big problems.

9. Be Aware

Pay attention to what is going on around you. This cannot be said enough. If you are aware of your surroundings, you will notice a change in the attitude of the crowd. If you believe that trouble is soon to come, you should start making your way out.

10. Do not Discharge your Weapon

It may seem like a good idea to fire your gun into the air or spray the people around you with pepper spray, but that is NOT the case. If anything, this can cause the crowd to get even more angry and dangerous than before.

You cannot think that you are the only one holding a weapon, and you cannot believe that only the good guys are holding the weapons that are there. If you pull your weapon, you need to be ready for the repercussions.
