5 Guns To Guarantee Your Survival No Matter What The Situation!

We’ve all seen the debates about which guns are best to have in different situations. There’s everything from Tips for First Time Gun Buyers to selecting a gun for your bug out bag.

So today, we wanted to talk about 5 Guns to Guarantee Your Survival.

When it comes to situations where you need to be putting meat on your table for your family, it’s often better to have a rifle instead of a hand-gun. A high-powered rifle with long-range power should be in every survivalist’s arsenal.

Not just from the standpoint of these high-powered rifles being extremely fun to shoot, but when it comes to dangerous situations these are one of the most useful.

But, we all know that a handgun can be useful in those instances where carrying around a rifle is not a possibility.

So, what is the best survival gun no matter what the situation?

Depending on your situation and where you live, you’ll want to keep different things in mind. I spent some time researching this topic and came across an article that nailed the subject on the head. I would be doing you a dis-service if I didn’t just share that article with you.

So rather than act like I’m the smartest guy around (only in my own mind), I decided to share the following excerpt from Ranger Man at shtfblog.com.

1) The Mighty AR-15!

best survival gun

This should really come as no surprise. My only guess as to why so many survival writers don’t list the “Black Rifle” as their top choice is because they want to set themselves apart from the pack. Like in politics, when you’re the man on top, you can expect attacks. There are very solid reasons for the AR-15’s extreme popularity and cult-like following. There are very solid reasons why its the #1 choice of the U.S. military and paramilitary groups (“AR-15” to include all variations). It’s the best – period.

Advantages: very common caliber; fast bullet with flat trajectory; highly adaptable platform that allows the user to meet mission specific needs; extensive options readily available; they’re everywhere (meaning so are parts); wide variety of available rounds from 55 grain to 75 grain, tracer rounds, steel penetrator tips, etc.; very, very light recoil; Made in the U.S.A., and in the case of Bushmaster, Made in Maine 😉

Disadvantages: smaller caliber than what’s found in other battle rifles; many moving parts; rather annoying to clean compared to other rifles; the gas system often comes under criticism for throwing the “gunk” back into the chamber (some call this “shitting where it eats”), though this problem has been remedied in some newer models (at a higher cost).

2) Ruger 10/22 Rifle

best survival gun

I can hear it now, “What!?” That’s right, the .22 rifle. It’s ALL about survivalism. Look, when TEOTWAWKI hits you’re going to want a rifle like the Ruger 10/22 for put some sort of meat on your dinner plate. Squirrels, gophers or the neighbors’ cats, the 10/22 is quiet, effective, and you can shoot all damn day for what it’d cost you to buy a 6-pack of PBR.

Additionally, a little recognized fact, Chechen rebels successfully used .22 rifles for sniping purposes against Russian troops in urban settings. The urban setting consisted of narrow streets and close buildings allowing these “snipers” to get exceptionally close to their targets. They strapped soda bottle silencers on them to further the effectiveness. I don’t care what you say about the .22lr, take one in the neck and you’ll think differently.

Advantages: already stated – go buy one

Disadvantages: none whatsoever

3) Compact 9mm Handgun

best survival gun

What’s a more common caliber than the .45 ACP? The 9mm. Unfortunately, it’s the most common handgun caliber in the United States used against police officers. Thugs love it. Love the 9mm, but don’t be a thug.

Advantages: cheaper to shoot than the .45 (and thus practice with); high capacity magazines; easier to conceal and carry

Disadvantage: less lead

4) AK-47

best survival gun

It’s durable, designed to be thrown into a mud hole for a month when it can be dug out and immediately used without cleaning. That might be an exaggeration, but not by much. It also delivers a beefy round for a standard issue assault rifle. If you’re outside the United States, there’s likely readily available parts and ammunition.

Advantages: banana clips, baby; jungled clipped banana clips, baby

Disadvantages: lacks the accuracy found in other assault rifles; made in China, or Russia, or Yugoslavia – you get the idea.

5) Remington 870 12 Gauge Pump-Action Shotgun

best survival gun

*shhhick-shickt*
Let’s hear that again.
*shhhick-shickt*

The sound is undeniable. You hear that and you instantly know what it means, “You wanna roll with me?” The only reasonable response is, “errrr . . . . nah, I’ll move along.”

You can get a shotgun that’ll take a bigger shell, but you don’t need it. The 12 gauge is exceptionally common and it’ll take a variety of shells: birdshot for game hunting survival purposes; double-ought buck for pushing intruders not only down, but back out the window they came in through; and slugs for anything else.

Advantages: common caliber; many accessories available for this model (pistolgrips, tube extensions, etc.); obscene knock-down power

Disadvantages: none come to mind

The Ultimate Guide to Living Off The Grid

The Ultimate Guide to Living Off The Grid

There are numerous disadvantages to having your life tied to the grid. Firstly, it means that you have to adhere to all the set rules created by whoever is in charge of the grid. The people in charge of the grid are not really concerned about taking care of the environment. Thus, by living on the grid, you are contributing to the slow death of the Earth.

Living off the grid means that you are insulated when disaster strikes. For instance, if war breaks out, your survival will not depend on the ability of those in charge to keep things running. The grid is derived from the ‘electric grid.’ However, it refers to various utilities such as food, water, and other amenities you need to survive.

Understanding What Living Off the Grid Will Mean Personally and Legally

Recently, there has been a lot of misleading information spreading, claiming that living off the grid is illegal. However, these articles are not wholly wrong. Government regulation has made it more difficult for people to live off the grid. After all, the government would lose the most if everyone suddenly went off the grid.

In some places in America, regulation has made it illegal to collect huge quantities of water or to have solar power, which is not tied to the grid. In some places, you may even be prevented from living in a travel trailer or to camp on your land. In other places, they have created regulation that makes it hard for you to build an off grid home. It is done by creating strict building codes.

Additionally, the banks are not very willing to lend on off-grid homes. Thus, it would seem that off-grid living is becoming quite difficult in America.

Differentiating Off Grid Living From Self-Sufficiency

Some people tend to intertwine these two terms. However, being self-sufficient does not always mean living off the grid. Living free of public utilities does not always make you self-sufficient.

By being self-sufficient, it means that you do not rely on others for food, power, defense, shelter, and many others. However, getting off the grid is a first step to being self-sufficient. Self-sufficiency is a long and complex journey that will require a lot of commitment to the course.

Getting an Off-the-Grid Source of Electricity

If you are going to be living off the grid, you will probably need some electricity. Some of the best methods for getting power off the grid are solar power and wind turbines. The choice of electricity source that you use will depend on your locality.

Click here to get a free solar quote.

In some places, it could make a lot of sense for you to use solar power because you receive plenty of sunshine. In other places, it would make more sense for you to use wind energy, especially if you live on a slope that receives high amounts of wind. In some places, it would make more sense to use both solar and wind.
However, in all cases, you will need some kind of storage component for off the grid electricity. Wind and solar are intermittent sources of electricity. It means that they only work when there is wind or the sunshine respectively. Ensure that you choose a storage battery that has a long life and a huge capacity. Besides that, you will have to combine it with other technologies such as cloth lines and LEDs. They use less electricity, which allows you to conserve the limited power produced by solar and wind sources.

Use Micro Hydro for Off-Grid Power

If you are going to live off the grid, micro hydro power is probably your best bet. This type of electricity source only requires a source of running water and some elevation. The force of gravity will do the rest. The water will move to the bottom from the top, and the momentum will be used to turn the turbines.

The good thing about micro hydro power is that it is constant. Unless the river dries up, you will always have power in your home. It is thus important that you choose the source of you micro hydropower carefully. You should ensure that it does not dry up seasonally.

Otherwise, you will need to have an alternative for when it does dry up. If you do not have a stream running through your land, micro hydro is not a viable option.

Be Prepared to Look for Your Food

One of the most time and resource consuming activities of living off the grid will be trying to find your own food. For instance, you will need to learn how to track wildlife for protein and how to grow food sustainably.

Creating food systems is not easy. Depending on how big your family is, it could take you up to ten years to get the system implemented. It is important that you plan for every aspect of your food production system without being in a rush.

Once you are done implementing the system, you will now need to focus on harvesting and storage. After you have managed to implement a system, you can expect to spend a significant amount of your time maintaining your system. You should also be prepared to do quite a lot of studying. You will have to read various books written by experts on how to create a sustainable food system.

You Will Need to Find Water

If you are living off the grid, you can do without most things, but water is not one of them. You will require water for keeping clean, cooking, and drinking. Otherwise, your attempt to live off the grid will fail.

One of the most common methods used is to drill for water.

However, that may not be possible in some areas because of fracking. You will be forced to use other methods to access your water. To pump the water from the ground, you can use wind or an electric pump.

If you have wind power, it is the best option since it consumes the least amount of energy. One way of getting an alternative source of water is by using rainwater collection. If you live in an area that receives good rainfall, ensure that you collect every drop you can. However, you will need to install a system to treat the water. That way you avoid drinking water that has been contaminated by bird droppings.

You will also need to have a major storage tank. The water level sometimes gets too low for you well during the dry months. Have a storage vessel that can hold at least 1000 gallons of water. If your water pumping equipment fails, you will still have a source of water before you can do repairs. Set the water collection tank in such a way that it collects water and delivers it to you by gravity.

Reduce Water Usage

Besides having enough water, you will need to reduce your usage. In America, everyone uses about 100 gallons of water daily per person. In comparison, people in Africa use about 5 gallons daily per person. That is clearly and an indication that you may need to make a few adjustments to how you live.

You will need to purchase appliances that are water-efficient such as dishwashers and laundry machines. That way, you will reduce the risk of running out of water while living off the grid.

Building Your Off-Grid Home

If you are going to live off the grid, you will want to come up with a house that is not hooked up to the grid.

Additionally, you do not want to use conventional materials to come up with a house since that would go against your desire to be independent of the grid.

Check out more on building off grid here.

Also, you see read this article on How to Build an Off Grid Home Easily and Essentially for Free.

Why It is Important to Use Natural Materials

Cement production is one of the most environmentally polluting activities on earth. Besides that, it requires huge amounts of energy to produce just one bag of cement. The waste produced by cement factories is also not recycled. If you use natural materials, you will be reducing the impact you have on the earth, which one of the reasons for off grid living.

Some of the most common materials used in off grid living are straw bales, sawdust, wood chips, sticks, and earthy materials. The most common earthy materials used are earthbags, adobe, rammed earth, cob, sand, stones, and rock. Other materials often used for off-grid house construction are coconut, sisal, cork, and bamboo. These are all fast-growing plants that can be renewed with ease. You can learn more about that here.
The best way to determine what material you will use is by looking at your area. If you find that there is sand, clay, rocks, or lime, that may be what you should use. The main reason for using materials in your environment is that you will not have to transport them over long distances. The energy used to transport materials over a long distance usually contributes to environmental pollution.

Consider Using Trash

Most people are familiar with the use of old tires, used bottles, and even soda cans for home construction. Constructing a house with tires usually entails packing tires full of cement or earth and stacking them on top of each other.

However, a less common but effective source of construction material is debris from construction sites. If you know of an old structure that is being brought down, you can opt to acquire the existing materials to construct your house.

For instance, old doors, the roof tiles, and the kitchen counter tops may be re-used for your project. Many companies out there buy debris from demolition sites and use it to construct new homes. Consider using one of these companies to construct your off grid home.

Always think About Size

The average size of homes in America today is double what it was about 50 years ago. A big home uses a lot of energy and resources to construct. If you are living off the grid, you do not want a structure that will cost you a lot just to live in.

Consider coming up with a home that only has as much space as you need. You may also opt to purchase a modular home that comes with everything you need.

You can learn more about how to live off the grid in a tiny house here.

Sewage

You will require a waste disposal system if you plan to live off the grid. If you have already installed a septic system, you are already living off-grid. That means that your waste does not go to the waste treatment plant. However, if you do not have a septic system, it is still possible to live off-grid.
You home will generate two kinds of wastewater when you live off the grid. The first is black water and the other is gray water. The gray water does not have to be wasted. It can be used to flush the toilet or for purposes of watering the garden. By using it in this manner, you will have reduced your water usage footprint a great deal.
You now have the black water to deal with. This water results from the attempt to get rid of human waste from the home. The best way to get rid of this water is to use a composting toilet. The system captures it and puts it in the same compost bin as kitchen waste, grass cuttings, and kitchen scraps. Consequently, the wastewater is converted into fertilizer for use in your garden.

Summary

While living off the grid is a huge effort, it can be done. An average person with basic knowledge on home construction and mechanics can turn this into a reality.

If you are going to go off grid, you will also need to think about efficiency. Otherwise, you may have to expend excessive amounts of energy just to survive.

If you are efficient, it also means that you will not need to use as much money. It is a great way of making your dream of one day being wholly self-sufficient a reality. Many people are already doing it and you can too if you are committed enough.

The Art of Raising Off-Grid Kids, And What They Have To Say About It

I guess we all have an impression in our minds about what off-grid kids might be like.  The movie Captain Fantastic does a pretty good job of showcasing one side of it, although it’s very Hollywood based.

But there are so many variables…. the Fouch Family came from a traditional “on grid” life and now has come into their new life of becoming homesteaders.

Now their experience continues to progress as the stories they tell will become more and more from the voice of experience.

Raising Off-Grid KidsScreen Shot 2017-01-16 at 11.26.15 AM

Here’s what our kids, ages 7, 5, and 2 have to say about the simple life. Some voiceover from their parents, explaining things, as the kids show off their make-believe Sarlacc and some Olympic-style bed jumping.

How to Make Rice Water

Have you heard that rice water is a good thing to learn to prepare?

rice water

How to Make Rice Water

Learning how to make rice water is really easy and you most likely already have all of the ingredients that you need to make it.

Why is rice water useful?

Rice water is useful when someone is having any type of stomach issues like vomiting or diarrhea. It is very calming if you have an upset stomach, insanely bland, starchy and helps with getting some nutrients into you (or whoever isn’t feeling well)

It really is simple to learn how to make rice water.

All you need is

  1. Rice
  2. Water

Those are the two ingredients you need, simple. Right?

Put two tablespoons of rice into a pot with 1 cup of water. Do not add salt. Now, bring the water to a boil and boil until the rice is tender.

Then strain the rice out and the milky liquid that is left over is the rice water you are looking for.

You can then eat the rice, or add it to a recipe or even use it to feed chickens or your pet dogs. Just don’t boil it for too long because then the rice water will be extremely thick.

We find that anywhere from 15-30 minutes is the right amount of time to boil.

If it gets too thick, you can water it down.

Be sure to let the rice water cool before serving the person who isn’t feeling their best. You can drink it warm or cold so keep that in mind.

Biggest Reason to Learn How To Make Rice Water

The primary reason to make rice water is for relief of diarrhea.

Bland and hydrating as a broth, rice water is a bit starchy and  provides soothing relief for stomach upset whether you drink it hot or cold.

This home remedy for diarrhea is effective and also provides a negligible amount of vitamins and minerals, which is beneficial over drinking water alone.

Benefits of Rice Water

Rich in the vitamin B complex, folic acid, iron, potassium, magnesium and zinc, rice water gains its properties during the cooking process of rice. White rice is ideal, since during the cooking process it loses more properties than whole-wheat rice. Among its biggest benefits are:

  • Natural energy.
  • For gastrointestinal problems such as diarrhea, nausea and vomiting.
  • Prevents gastroenteritis.
  • Helps regulate body temperature.
  • Recommended for pregnant women to induce breast milk production.
  • For relieving skin irritation.
  • Prevents and cures constipation.

Gov. Scott signs Florida emergency concealed carry bill

Good news for all of you living in Florida who carry….

Here’s a look into what was just stated over on the guns.com article

It will now be legal for gun owners in the Sunshine State to temporarily carry concealed handguns without a permit during periods when the sun isn’t shining so bright.

Now law is a measure to allow law-abiding citizens without concealed carry licenses to bear arms during declared mandatory evacuations. A reboot of a failed 2014 bill that was killed in last minute political maneuvering, this session’s effort had an easier go of it after police lobby groups embraced the proposal. It passed the Republican-controlled Senate in an easy 29-10 vote while the House last month approved it by a 86-26 margin.

“As Hurricane Season approaches it’s critical that our rights are protected during natural disasters,” advised Sen. Jeff Brandes, R-Petersburg, in a statement. “With the signing of SB 290, all lawful gun owners will be permitted to carry a concealed weapon if they are complying with a mandatory evacuation during a state of emergency. I’m proud to have sponsored this bipartisan bill ensuring that we have the right to protect our families during these sometimes chaotic times.”

What police are being forced to do now is SICK

This is what we’ve come to.

With all the politically-correct activism against supposedly rampant police brutality against citizens, where every action law enforcement takes under stress when every second counts is under scrutiny, we now have the most ludicrous and dangerous recommendation from an activist police commission as to what police should do when confronting someone armed.

Run away.

police-1000x640

And tragically, this is not a joke.

From the official blog of the Los Angeles Police Protective League, If a police officer is confronted by a suspect with a weapon, those entrusted to set policies for the Police Department believe officers should run away.

That’s the recent finding from the Los Angeles Police Commission which has turned Monday morning quarterbacking into a weekly agenda item at the three-ring circus they preside over every Tuesday morning. In the Commission’s most recent decision on an officer-involved shooting, in which a suspect charged at two officers swinging an 8 to 9-inch knife, they faulted the officer for not “redeploying” to “create distance.” In plain English: the officer didn’t run away.

The key facts in this case are not in dispute. A female suspect, armed with an 8 to 9-inch knife, charged at officers, repeatedly ignored commands to stop, and was recorded yelling “shoot me” as she swung her knife from side to side.

The armed suspect quickly closed the gap between her knife and the police officers from 70 feet to less than 5 feet in under 10 seconds. That is when the first officer discharged his service weapon. The second officer involved had only three seconds to respond to the imminent threat. Even the Commission stated that “It was reasonable for Officer C to believe, in the moment when the use of force occurred, that the subject would imminently assault him with the knife.”

So where’s the beef?

The officers didn’t run away.

Suspect charging from the front. Vehicles on either side. Where do you “redeploy?” Run backwards. This is absurd and it’s dangerous. What happens if the officer loses his footing with a charging suspect? What happens if the suspect runs into a nearby home or store and confronts its occupants with her weapon? What if the suspect also had a concealed gun?

What is created when an officer turns tail and runs away is a large target. It’s called a back. The officer would put their lives in further jeopardy by running away if the suspect had a gun. At this close range, running away would create a self-caused danger to the officers and the public.

It sure must be easy to talk about “redeploying” an officer’s position while sipping a Diet Coke or bottled water while sitting in a police-guarded, air-conditioned room, in a cushy office chair, watching the events unfold in slow motion on a big-screen TV.

The message the Los Angeles Police Commission is sending to officers confronted with a violent and dangerous suspect is clear: You can save your life or save your job, but you cannot do both.

Liberalism is neutering our law enforcement. It has already neutered our military – literally and figuratively, as transgender troops are welcomed and Rules of Engagement are made so stringent, warriors like Clint Lorance end up in jail for actually killing the enemy.

The inmates are running the asylum and already criminals are owning the streets. Not surprisingly, police recruitment is struggling and morale is plummeting. In Chicago for example, police stops are down by 90 percent as violent crime skyrockets.
https://www.dnainfo.com/chicago/20160331/bronzeville/chicago-police-stops-down-by-90-percent-as-gun-violence-skyrockets So far this year, 3,182 people have been shot in the Windy City, 494 fatally. Only eight of those killed were officer-involved shootings. That’s just 1.6 percent – hardly an epidemic, but you’d never know that from reading the liberal media.

Nobody volunteers to become a police officer if the job description includes “sitting duck,” “target” and “impotent.”

No wonder gun sales to private citizens are skyrocketing across the nation. Who’s going to protect us if the people who are supposed to are told they cannot?

This is absolutely insane.

25 injured in explosion on Chelsea street, inside garbage can

CHELSEA, Manhattan —  The FDNY reports that 25 civilians were injured in an explosion Saturday night in a busy area of Chelsea, Manhattan in New York City.

The explosion took place around 8:30pm in a garbage can in front of 135 23rd St. between Sixth and Seventh avenues. The building, named Selis Manor, is an apartment complex for the blind.

“It was loud. It was very loud,” said Crown Heights resident Fredricke M. Farrell. “I was on 21st street and the blast sounded like it was right next door.”

The FDNY says none of the injuries appear to be life-threatening at this time.

Nassau County Executive Edward Mangano and Acting Police Commissioner Thomas Krumpter announced Saturday night that the Nassau County Police Department is on heightened alert following the explosions in New York and New Jersey.

The victims were taken to area hospitals. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives arson and explosives task force is responding to the explosion as well.

People in the area told PIX11 they could feel the vibrations from the outdoor explosion.

“I was eating dinner and felt the vibrations of the blast,” said Yemi Osibogun, a Bronx resident who was seated at a nearby sushi restaurant. “My plate actually shook.”

Facebook activated their safety check feature for the explosion, allowing users nearby to tag their safety.

The explosion comes hours after a pipe bomb exploded in Seaside Park, New Jersey near the Semper Fi 5K Charity Run Route. The device was also placed in a garbage can.

Photos posted to social media showed hundreds of people standing in the streets trying to figure out where the explosion came from.

People are urged to avoid the area as police search for other explosive devices.

Police have stopped all southbound traffic on Seventh Avenue at 34th Street.

The NYPD Counterterrorism Unit tweeted asking New Yorkers to remain vigilant and aware of their surroundings.

How To Pick A Good Hunting Knife

What makes a good hunting knife.  There are five basic aspects that are very important, steel that can hold an edge, type of build, handle fit and feel, shape and function of the blade and the carry sheath.

Lets look at each of these.

1) First, you need a good piece of steel.

The blade must hold and edge well and be durable. Quality damascus fits that requirement great. If you are in the market for a damascus knife know that, while it holds a great edge, it requires maintenance.

Damascus represents an art of design and a level of craftsmanship commitment that gets passed on to the owner.

how to pick the perfect hunting knife

The maintenance is not a big deal but if you know you are the type of guy who doesn’t appreciate your tools to that level you should go stainless.

If maintenance free is your goal there are a few stainless options. The most important thing, again, is to be sure you get one that holds an edge and is durable.

There are many stainless options on the market these days and while some are great, some are garbage. Remember, the point of stainless is less maintenance but you want to achieve that without much compromise of its blade function.

For my money, D2 tool steel is the best choice for a knife.

While it is just under being considered true stainless it needs very little care and will hold an edge like to other.

One draw back, some say, is that it is harder to sharpen than a cheaper steel and that is true, you must spend a little more time getting the edge.

But when you are in the field and need a knife to cut and finish the job it is your steel. Being able to sharpen the blade easily is a plus so stay away from multi-faceted edged blades.

2) Second, the knife should be a full tang.  Period.

3) Third, the handle has to have excellent hold-ability even when it is bloody, wet or covered in fat.

I prefer the timeless unfinished wooden handles.

However, they need to be maintained by oiling them once in a while. If not they will absorb blood etc and and they can dry out and crack over time.

Raw wood is in the same class as damascus so do some honest soul searching before committing to your knife purchase.

If you find you are a maintenance free guy new resin based materials, such as G10, are great. The benefits of G10 is it is impervious to liquids, stable and very durable. The cons is they are fairly unimpressive in looks.

Definitely function over form.

Different layering of G10 can create a unique and desirable look if you can find the product. KRYTON handles have good surface grip but it does absorb moisture.

When cleaning fish of butchering the blood and other fluids will absorb into the handle and eventually that can get nasty. The most important factor is control and that is achieved by a good hand fit to the handle.

An intentional ergonomic design that stays in place should be sought out.

4) Fourth, the shape of the blade will determine how it functions.

If you want an all purpose knife you will need a blade that is strong enough to separate joints yet has a tip that is nimble enough to fit in awkward places.

It is also needs to have some belly in the blade towards the tip of the knife for skinning. I would stay away from fad gut hooks, mostly rookies use them and they get in the way when butchering. They are also very hard to sharpen.

The people who like them do so for the look and not the function and I admit I have seen some cool looking gut hook knives but they ate not going with me in the field.

Also, you don’t want a blade that is too long. I find that anywhere between 5-8 inches in blade length works well for whitetail size game.

5) Another thing commonly overlooked is a good sheath.

Most modern hunters don’t wear there knives in the field. They throw them in their packs and pull them out when needed.

However, if you wear yours in the field be sure that sheath has a strap or at least be sure it holds the knife firmly in place.  Is sad to lose a $150 knife walking through the woods in the dark because you had a good knife resting in a poorly fitted sheath.

Follow these tips and you should end up with a knife that becomes a beneficial partner in the field for life.

Good luck and safe hunting this season from all of us at Bliss Knife Works.

Why Simple Living Is The Forgotten Key To Self Actualization

Key To Self Actualization

For the past ten years I have been pretty much into personal development. Well, as a teenager I was already a bit interested in not-so-mainstream topics such as the power of the human mind, psychic phenomena and plenty of other metaphysical topics. It comes to no surprise that my peers thought I was a bit weird, you know how it is. So when I got hooked on to personal development topics later on in life, I was already primed for certain ideas and insights. It came easier for me to hop on from one book or one topic to another without needing a stretch of time to digest certain ideas. I got pretty sucked into it. I read heaps of books, started off my blog Soul Hiker and wrote a few hundred articles to share my insights and experiences with others following the same path.

In those ten years of learning and practice, I did come a long way with a wealth of inner growth but also many pitfalls. What is more relevant is that I have also arrived at a solid practical realisation a kind of a key that unlocks some doors without having to knock them down really. That key is Simple Living or the idea of simplifying life in order to shed away what is unnecessary, inauthentic and a hindrance to your life purpose. The concept might seem obvious but somehow hidden none the less.

Personal growth, or rather actualising your highest potential and becoming the best version of yourself, requires shedding off and letting go of things which are not authentically in line with your Soul agenda rather than putting in a lot of effort to learn or acquire something else. Its energy-wasting spending hours, days and weeks trying to relearn habits, boosting your confidence, visualising your goals, improving your creativity, doing soul searching, etc without first simplifying your life. Yes all these things and others are important personal development tools but I have realised that by doing one thing engaging in a path of Simple Living will make everything else effortless. This is particularly true to your goal of self-actualisation or becoming the best You.

So in a way, if we only tried to make life simpler and nothing else, its already a hundredfold better than trying hard to do other self-improvement stuff some of which perhaps fail, we give up on or take us a lot of persistence and struggle to achieve. I strongly believe that the message of Simple Living is a very important one and here are some of the reasons why:

Less Noise & Clutter:

In an online course I created about Simple Living, one of the most important lectures is one which has to do with clearing and decluttering spaces. Not just physical spaces around us (although this is also important) but our inner spaces too. In a way living a simpler life means managing your time and space better. Very often our spaces become cluttered and disordered, making life more difficult than it has to be.

On a physical level, this can be seen in cluttered living or working spaces, rooms in our homes or perhaps disorganised drawers, closets and desks. On an emotional and psychological level, this manifests as mental noise, unclear paths of action, conflicting ideas and lack of a clear purpose. So decluttering our inner and outer spaces will literally clear the obstructions for us (or others: hint) to move freely through them and this will resonate on all other levels of our life. Clearly there is much more to decluttering than routine it is a way of opening up to life.

Understanding what is Relevant:

Another important concept of simple living is understanding what is necessary vs. what isnt. It is about distinguishing between our real needs and socially suggested wants. Of course everyone is able to distinguish between the two but we dont most of the time because we live in a collective trance of consumerism and mass media.

When we start becoming more aware of how much our actions and decisions are influenced by society and culture, we start standing back from it all. It becomes more and more clear that a lot of the things we were made to believe were needs are nothing more than wants and we can do without because they are not authentic to our purpose. This clarity brings with it a sense of power and freedom. In itself it is the spirit of simple living.

So in a nutshell living simply involves being clear about what is relevant, necessary and needed rather than living in a haze or worse living out a social program just like automatons.

Finding Authenticity:

The last point naturally brings forth a more interesting topic that of living an authentic life. But what does living an authentic life really mean? In my view, living authentically means not being limited or confined to live out someone elses life or a social template laid down to us through our socialisation. It means being free of the fear of being judged or disapproved of by your peers and authorities. It means being free to follow your passions and purpose without being infected by those fear-based thoughts transmitted by others.

Creating Space for Inner Creativity:

Of course authenticity walks hand in hand with creativity. It is natural that creativity requires a degree of freedom from constraints and limited thinking. Free-thinker, artists and bohemians are considered to be creative because they live outside the norms and behavioural rules of society. They are often nonconformists because of this reason. But more importantly, creativity arises when there is enough space for it to flow through and also here I mean inner and outer space.

So having a simplified and clear environmental and inner spaces is conducive to more creativity. The reverse is also true. Try to work in a messy store room with machinery noise going on and see whether creativity comes knocking on your door!

Life Purpose in Focus:

People often ask me how is it that they can find their life purpose. Many times I jokingly reply that they are asking the wrong person since it took me a long while to discover mine but I know that a good part of the answer lies in simplicity. In other words, the less physical, mental and emotional obstructions one has in life, the more clear his or her life purpose comes into focus. There is no real mystery here. The perfect analogy to vision is obvious. If you try to look for something say your TV remote control in a disorganised and overcrowded room it is going to be more difficult then if there was nothing else in the room besides the remote control. In this scenario, the more you start shedding away the junk and stuff in the room, the better are the chances that what you are looking for comes into view. Same thing with your life purpose. If you are trying to be approved by others by living other peoples goals and standards, the less chance you have of coming close to understand what is authentically your life purpose.

On the other hand, with less obstructions along the way, what genuinely drives you becomes clearer, which brings me to the next point.

Understanding Yourself and Motivations:

Finding your life purpose might not always be a direct result of simplifying your life although a lot of times it is. Sometimes simplifying life brings us first closer to understanding ourselves and our inner motivations which then sheds more light on our true purpose.

Sometimes our motivations and drives are not clear because very often the mind and heart are in conflict or out of sync. With simplicity comes less noise and conflict which in turn makes it easier to have a better understanding of ourself and our motivations.

More Time or Better Management of It:

The natural companion to decluttering spaces is managing our time better. Admittedly, I was always at a loss when it comes to managing my time. But then I found that time is much easier to manage when you take away all those things, chores, pressures and activities which server no purpose. In reality when you are living a simpler life, time management is not so much of an issue anymore. Time management is more relevant when you are bombarded with a thousand chores and activities, the hallmark of a complicated and stress-laden modern lifestyle.

Simple living is moving in the opposite direction to this. So when you are doing only those things and activities which springs out from an authentic sense of passion and belonging, time management is simpler. Of course some time management skills still apply even in simple living in fact in my course I have also reserved space for this but it is not the rat-race time management sort of thing; its more of a further optimisation to an already focused and simple life.

How I Learned To Fall Asleep In Under 1 Minute

Fall Asleep In Under 1 Minute

Sleepless and Stressed

It was the week before my best friends wedding, and my anxiety (nerves, plus excitement) had reached epic levels. I wasnt sleeping, to say the least. Part of that had to do with the maid of honor speech I would be giving. I was terrified and could not shut my brain off to fall asleep at night.

After day three of lying awake until the wee hours of the night, I sheepishly admitted to her that I was too nervous to fall asleep, and shethe bride, who was sleeping like a baby the week before her own weddingtold me I needed to try the 4-7-8 breathing trick.

She happens to be a licensed wellness practitioner who studies meditation, stress, and breathing techniques, and told me it would change my life. You simply breathe in through your nose for four seconds, hold your breath for seven seconds, and exhale through your mouth for eight seconds. She explained that the studied combination of numbers has a chemical-like effect on our brains, and would slow my heart rate and soothe me right to sleep that night. It works, she told me. Its crazy.

How it Works

I couldnt wait to put the trick to the test, and to my complete disbelief, I woke up the next morning unable to even remember getting to the eighth second of the exhale because it knocked me out that fast. For the next four nights leading up to the big day, even as my stress increased, I was able to fall asleep the minute I tried the 4-7-8 trick. I also used it to relax in the moments leading up to the speech.

When you feel stressed or anxious, adrenaline courses through your veins, your heart beats at a rapid rate, and your breathing becomes quick and shallow. So before I get into the specifics behind how the 4-7-8 breathing trick works, I wanted to explain in my own words what it feels like when you try it. To me, the effect of the breathing technique feels almost like a sedative drug, because in order to hold your breath for seven seconds and then to exhale for eightwhen your breath is so shallow and shortyour body is forced to slow your heart rate. It has no choice. Holding your breath, and then slowly, deliberately exhaling for eight seconds, causes a chain reaction. It feels like going from a mad-dash sprint to a finish line to a slow, leisurely, calming stroll through the park.

When you first start, youll be desperate to just take in another breath, or youll want to speed up your counting, but if you stick to the numbers (or at least try to), and dont take any breaks (in other words, consecutively repeat the 4-7-8 without resuming regular breathing), you can literally feelyour heart rate slow down, your mind get quieter, and your whole body physically relax. It washes over you like a calming, relaxing drug. I can never remember getting past the first set of 4-7-8.

Do you know the feeling of being put under by anesthesia, where you are conscious, and the next thing you remember is waking up? Thats what this is like for me: As soon as I start the practice, the next thing I remember, Im waking up in the morning and cant even remember beginning the 4-7-8 count the night before. Crazy.

Now to the more technical details: People who are stressed or anxious are actually chronicallyunder-breathing, because stressed people breathe shortly and shallowly, and often even unconsciously hold their breath. By extending your inhale to a count of four, you are forcing yourself to take in more oxygen, allowing the oxygen to affect your bloodstream by holding your breath for seven seconds, and then emitting carbon dioxide from your lungs by exhaling steadily for eight seconds. The technique will effectively slow your heart rate and increase oxygen in your bloodstream, and may even make you feel slightly lightheaded which contributes to the mild sedative-like effect. It will instantly relax your heart, mind, and overall central nervous system because you are controlling the breath versus continuing to breathe short, shallow gasps of air.

How it Can Work For You

Mindful breathing practices have been a part of yoga and Eastern wellness modalities for centuries, but arent as popular in Western culture. The most well-known champion of the 4-7-8 breathing technique in the U.S., who is somewhat responsible for the prevalence that the technique does have amongst integrative medicine practitioners, yogis, and those in search of stress reduction and overall relaxation, is Harvard-educated Dr. Andrew Weil.

Though Im not promising or claiming (nor does Dr. Weil) that practicing this breathing technique can fight disease or provide clinical benefits, I can tell you one thing: If it affects you like it did me, it will help you fall asleep way faster. Not only is it free, it also works for a number of different instances. In addition to using it to fall asleep in a pinch, you can practice it if you wake up in the middle of the night and find yourself thinking about something you have to do the next day, in order to fall back asleep; if you are nervous before an event (like a wedding, or giving a speech); if you are angry about something and want to calm down.

My friend (the bride-to-be who slept like a baby the week before her wedding), who gets nervous to fly, uses it before flights and during if the plane encounters turbulence.

It is now what I use to fall asleep every single night, and each morning, Im amazed at how well it worked.

10 Excellent Ways To Start Your Day

start-the-day-motivated

We live in busy times when most of us have to work around 40 hours a week. In order to lead this kind of lifestyle, one should sort their time and energy properly throughout the whole day. Healthy morning rituals can really have a positive impact on the way you spend your day. Not everyone realizes that what you do and the way you think in the morning can affect your mood, motivation, energy and the way you do things throughout day.

It is of great importance to start your day the proper way in order to grow, feel happier and to be more productive. Read on for ideas on how to make the best of your mornings.

1. Early to bed, early to rise…

If you really want to improve your mornings and work on building some new healthy morning habits, you would probably need more time. Getting up earlier is a way to add an extra hour or so to your day. But if you love the peace and quiet the late nights provide you with and you have turned into a night owl, you would probably love the peace and quiet that the early mornings offer, too. Getting up before others gives you not only a feeling of satisfaction but also provides you with extra time to follow your morning rituals before you leave the house for work/school.

2. Stretching

Most people experience a feeling of stiffness right after waking up. This can be dealt with really easily by following a stretching routine every morning. There are so many benefits to stretching but you can only feel them if you stretch regularly. If you are not sure how to stretch properly, you can find tons of them on YouTube. Choose the ones that you think will suit you best and just do them every single morning. You will sense the change yourself.

3. Listening to music or an audiobook

Listening to your favorite songs in the morning is a great way to uplift your spirit and get prepared for an exciting new day. It sets a positive mindset and gets you pumped for an active day. Depending on the responsibilities and plans you have for the day, you can adjust the genres of music that you wish to start your day with. If you have planned a day for relaxation, music that is not too loud would be best. But still, it is a matter of choice. Another great source of inspiration in the morning is a good audiobook. Listening to one is a great option for a start of the day because it stimulates the imagination, works on your abilities to focus and can inspire you in a variety of ways. Plus, songs can often be catchy which can affect your work during the day, but audiobooks are less likely to influence your day in a negative way.

4. Drinking a glass of warm lemon water

Every day when you wake up your body is dehydrated because you havent drunk any water for about 8 hours while you were sleeping. This is why it is so important to rehydrate your body first thing in the morning. Avoiding that and having breakfast right after you have woken up isnt a good idea because the first thing your body really needs at that time of the day is water. Drinking a glass of warm water with freshly squeezed lemon juice is a perfect start of the day. This beverage helps your digestive system to prepare for the meals you are about to take during the day. Plus, the lemon makes water tastier. You can also add a spoon of honey to sweeten the sour taste of the lemon water.

5. Scraping Your Tongue

Along with brushing your teeth, scraping your tongue is a great way to improve your mouth hygiene. Once you try it, you wouldnt want to give it up. It does not only help you get rid of the unpleasant morning breath, but you would also taste your food better as it rids you of that film over your tongue that stays there even after you have brushed your teeth. If you dont know what to use for that purpose, you can either buy a toothbrush that comes with a tongue scraper on the back or a plastic triangle-shaped scraper. If you cant find either of these, you can simply use a spoon.

Nourishing, your body with fresh food that contains essential for the body minerals and vitamins, is a must if you want to start your day in a healthy way. That is why a green smoothie is one of the best choices for breakfast. It helps boost your immune system, boosts energy and satisfies your hunger. Making a green smoothie is an easy job. You just throw some spinach, kale and other green vegetables or fruit in the blender and voila! It is an easy way to provide your body with the much needed fiber, phytonutrients and minerals. Just remember not to eat anything else at least 30 minutes after you drink the green smoothie. Try this out and notice the change in the way your body feels during the day.

7. Rebounding on a mini trampoline

Rebounding 100 times is an excellent start of the day. Some of its benefits are that it wakes up your whole body, you train your balance, stimulates lymph movement, works every muscle group of your body, helps the functioning of your thyroid, reduces stress and so on. By the end of the 100th jump, you will feel your body tightened and your mind- awake.

8. Smiling in the mirror

It is amazing how smiling at yourself in the mirror in the morning can change your whole day. This sends signals to your brain that stimulate the release of hormones that make you feel happier. It also boosts your confidence and you feel more determined to go after your goals. It is a simple way to encourage yourself to do your best every day. Once you make it a habit, you will feel amazed of the way it changes your mindset. You become a more positive and happier person. Yes, that simple trick does wonders!

9. Dry brushing your body

This is an old Ayurvedic practice which can help the circulation and sloughs off the dead skin cells. Choose an exfoliating brush that is not too rough but also, not too soft, because otherwise it wont be able to do its thing. The way to do the brushing is to start from the area where your heart is, then move to the limbs and the rest of your body. After you have finished with this process, take a shower and apply body lotion in the end in order to keep that suppleness. Dry brushing your body can make your skin smoother, and you will feel it much nicer.

10. Todays top 3

Leading a busy lifestyle can trick you into forgetting which the most important things you need to do for the day are as you have so many responsibilities to do and plans to follow. Making it a habit to do a list of the top 3 most important things that you need to do before anything else will help you avoid the confusion when you do your tasks for the day. If you succeed with following the list of these three things every day, it will give you the feeling of fulfillment and it will become easier for you to differentiate the important activities from the others. Also, you would like to start small as it will be easier to follow that habit every day and after you make progress, you will simply feel more confident to replace the easier tasks with some bigger and bigger goals for the day.

Hidden Camera Records An Elderly Lady Alone At Home. What It Reveals Is Heartbreaking

sdfdsf2323f2f3f32f32f323f2

We are all going to grow old some day, if we are lucky enough to maintain relative good health. We may not make it to the age of 98, like Mary Tony, who is the subject of the video you are about to watch below. When you finish watching this heartbreaking video, it will give you pause, to think of elderly people you know who may be facing the terrible loneliness that Mary suffers.

The title of this video is Junk Mail, because when Mary is not at the senior center that she enjoys immensely, she has nothing to do and no one to talk to. She lives alone and no one comes to visit. She confides in the person interviewing her that [she] has to do something or [shell] go nuts so she cuts up junk mail, puts it in a bag and throws it away.

The film crew, known as Voyager, had a mission to gain a window into the life of a 98-year-old person, living out her life without any attention or interaction with her family. People need human contact and love from other human beings. Thankfully, Mary receives this at the senior center that she has started to attend. However, she is left with many empty hours where no one comes to see her, during which her loneliness is truly unbearable. Her family is too busy to see her. When the crew asks Mary how she feels about her living situation she responds, I dont mind. What am I going to do? Where could I go? I am by myself.

Marys story is not unlike many of the elderly who are ignored at the end of their lives. It is such an important reminder, of the impact of the difference made by a simple visit, every so often. Mary was so overwhelmed by a visit organized by the senior center, that she was brought to grateful tears, saying I love you all for coming..its made my day and Ill never forget this. Please SHARE Marys story with your family and friends on Facebook.
